So, I used to really HATE going to see the doctor. I think that all started when I was younger and went to the doctor and stepped on the scale and weighed 150 pounds… My mom made some comment and I said it must be my shoes.. It was a joke in the family for a long time… So, then for several years I would not go to the doctor. I did see my doctor for the first time in 2009 at the recommendation of a friend. She said that this doctor was very good and kind. So, I went to see her. I was overweight, had depression issues along with other health issues that were going to get worse. Fast forward a few years and I started working for Humana. I had to go yearly for a biometric screening to check cholesterol, weight, blood pressure, etc. It then became very obvious that I was very overweight, unhealthy, and was headed for a disaster. Then in 2012 my doctor started telling me that if my blood pressure and heart rate didn’t get better I should see the cardiologist… I didn’t… Then, I went in 2013 and she checked my cholesterol because I had to do that for work. It was 216. She said she wasn’t going to do anything now but once I was 40 I would need to get on medication. She then put me on blood pressure medications which would also help with my heart rate since it was in the 100’s in the AM. I wouldn’t take those meds though. I started to lose weight and thought I would improve everything. I went back to see my doctor last August and had lost about 25-30 pounds. She was happy and she then told me that even though I was losing weight my heart rate was still high. If I continue to let it run over 90 bpm all the time, I was going to end up with (or might already have) cardiomyopathy. She again told me to see the cardiologist, which I did not do.
Fast forward to today… I go to my appointment and the nurse tells me that the system is giving her an alert as my weight is so much lower than in August. I told her I had been working on losing weight and have now lost 65 pounds. She said “that is great. What are you doing?” I told her all about the 21 Day Challenge with Haney’s Health & Fitness and she said “well it is working. You look great!” The doctor then comes in and the first thing she says when she sees me is “YOU ARE THIN!”. I said, “I have lost some more weight”. She said “I can tell. You look amazing!” She asked what I was doing and I let her know that I am doing the 21 Day Challenge. I told her about my shoulder that has been giving me… Here comes the bad news. She said that I am not to do any push-ups or any lifting with that arm for 4 weeks. She prescribed anti-inflammatory pills and gel to use along with hot & cold twice a day. If it doesn’t get better in 4 weeks with the rest, I will need an MRI. That was devastating. I have just gotten to the point where I am really wanting to work on my upper body strength more but I will just keep doing what I can for now.
She also ordered labs and I just got the email with the results. All is excellent except for Vitamin D. I will need to start taking Vitamin D 5,000 units daily, which is OK with me. But, I am most happy with my labs. My total cholesterol has gone from 219 to 160 since August, 2013. My triglycerides have gone from 150 to 60 since August, 2013.
Overall, I am quite happy with today’s doctor’s appointment. It makes me feel good to see the numbers are changing. I can see that the work I have been doing for almost 2 years it coming to fruition now. My doctor also asked me about my mood and how things are without taking any anti-depressants (have not taken since 2013). I told her that I am feeling fine and don’t have any issues with my mood/depression. She asked what I think might have fixed that and I said “getting healthy!”
