So, my life changed drastically in June of 2013. Weighing more than 255 pounds, I went to volunteer at Camp War Eagle so that I could save some money on tuition for my kid's camp experience that summer. I had no idea what I was in for before heading to camp but it started my journey.
One week of camp was pretty rough. The camp is set on the lake in Rogers, Arkansas and has a lot of hills. As a camp nurse you are responsible for running the health center as well as working out and about during the day and night taking care of the campers. I worked in the health center in the mornings passing out medications and assessing campers for illnesses and treating such. During the day we rotated heading out to the various areas where the campers were at (swimming pool, lake, gymnastics area, etc). We went out with backpacks and walkie talkies and basically handled what we could handle (bloody noses, bee stings, strains, sprains...). We also made sure the kids had sunblock on to prevent burns.
Let me tell you that between the exercise up and down those hills for several hours a day was enough but couple that with camp food it was a great diet plan! I did get emails from the camp coordinator stating that I could bring food, etc. but I thought "why would I do that?" so I didn't. Then, I realized that we ate what the kids ate every day.. Not so good...
So, in that week I lost 10 pounds! I was so excited that this started my journey. I knew for a very long time that I had to lose weight. But, I made excuses. I said "I am too busy. I am too fat."
